Prayers Based on Scripture

There are passages in the Bible that can also become personal prayers.

On this page I have gathered prayers based on Bible verses. Each prayer includes a reference to the verse it is based on. These prayers do not need to be repeated perfectly or prayed mechanically. They can simply help in moments when your own words feel hard to find, or when you want to look at your situation through the light of God’s Word.

Prayer to Remember God’s Love, John 3:16

God, thank You that You loved the world so much that You did not leave us on our own.

Thank You for Jesus. Thank You that salvation does not begin from my success, but from Your love and what You have done.

Help me receive this even on the days when I feel uncertain, inadequate or too unfinished.

Teach me to remember that the gospel is not only some distant truth far away, but something that also reaches me today.

Amen.

Prayer for Wisdom and Knowing God, Eph. 1:17-19

Lord Jesus,

Give me the spirit of wisdom and revelation so that I may truly know You more deeply. Not only in thoughts or words, but in a way that my heart also begins to understand who You are.

Open the eyes of my heart to see the hope You have called me into. Remind me that I am not drifting through life without direction, but that You have a purpose, a place and a path for me, even when I cannot clearly see it.

Help me understand how great an inheritance I have in You. That my life is not held together only by this moment, my own strength, my emotions or by how everything looks today.

Show me the greatness of Your power as well. The same power that works for those who believe. Help me trust in it even when my own strength feels small and my mind grows tired.

Lord, make this real in me. Open, brighten, strengthen and guide me.

Amen.

Prayer for Inner Strength, Eph. 3:14-19

Father,

I come before You and ask that You would strengthen me inwardly through Your Holy Spirit. Strengthen the places in me that grow tired easily, worry quickly or constantly try to survive by their own strength.

Let Christ dwell in my heart through faith. Not only as an idea, a teaching or words, but truly. Let You be at home within me, and let my inner life begin to rest on You.

Root me in love. Establish me in love. Help me grow away from fear, restlessness, striving and the constant need to control everything myself.

Open my heart to understand how wide and long and high and deep the love of Christ truly is. Let it become real to me even when I do not feel strong, successful or complete.

Help me know Your love, even though it surpasses understanding. Make it more than a beautiful thought to me. Make it the place where I can rest, grow and be changed.

Fill me with Your fullness. Strengthen my heart, quiet my soul and guide me to live more deeply in You.

Amen.

Prayer to Know God’s Will, Col. 1:9-12

Father,

I ask that You would fill me with the knowledge of Your will. Give me spiritual wisdom and understanding so that I would not walk only according to my own thoughts, feelings or old habits.

Help me live in a way worthy of You. Not through rigid performance, but in a way that my life would begin to bear good fruit. Fruit that can be seen in everyday life, in my choices, words, thoughts and the way I treat people.

Grow me in knowing You. Help me learn to know You more deeply, not only as information in my mind, but as real truth and security in my life.

Strengthen me with all Your power. Give me endurance when things do not change immediately. Give me patience when my mind wants to rush ahead, give up or take everything back into my own hands.

Teach me to thank You with joy. Remind me that You have made me part of the inheritance of the saints in light. My life is not held by darkness, fear or chance, but by Your hands.

Amen.

Prayer for Peace, Phil. 4:6-7

Father,

Help me not carry everything alone. You see the things that keep spinning in my mind and stealing my peace. You know the worries, fears, unfinished things and even the things I cannot fully put into words.

Teach me to bring them to You in prayer. Not only to grit my teeth and survive, but to truly leave things in Your hands. Help me ask for help, but also thank You because You already hear me before I see the answer.

Guard my heart and my thoughts in Christ Jesus. Let Your peace enter the places where my mind is restless, my body feels tense and my thoughts are running in every direction.

Give me the kind of peace that does not depend on everything being immediately clear or finished. Peace that surpasses my understanding. Peace that carries me even when I no longer have strength to carry everything myself.

I bring all of this to You. Here I am. Hold on to me.

Amen.

Prayer for When I Am Tired, Matt. 11:28

Jesus, thank You that I can come to You even when I am tired.

I do not have to first make myself strong, reasonable or spiritually polished. I can come exactly as I am.

Right now I am tired. There has been a lot to carry, and sometimes it feels like there is too much noise inside me all the time.

Help me rest near You. Remind me that not everything depends on me.

Thank You that You do not push away the one who comes to You weary.

Amen.

Prayer for When I Am Afraid, Isa. 41:10

God, thank You that You are not far away when I am afraid.

You see this fear even when I cannot explain it very well. You also see how quickly my mind begins building worst-case scenarios.

Help me remember that You are with me. Give me strength for this moment, not for every possible future all at once.

Hold on to me when I feel shaky inside.

Thank You that I do not have to face my fears alone.

Amen.

Prayer for Letting Go of Worries, 1 Peter 5:7

God, thank You that You care about me.

Thank You that I do not have to carry my worries alone or pretend they do not weigh on me.

I bring to You now the thing that keeps circling in my mind. The thing I return to again and again. The thing I cannot solve just by thinking harder.

Help me truly leave this before You, not only say that I do.

Give me wisdom for what is my responsibility, and peace for what is outside my control.

Amen.
