The One Prayer That Changed Everything

Prayer did not stay as just words.

People talk about prayer a lot, but it can easily start sounding distant. Like something that belongs in spiritual language, but not so much in ordinary life. For me, prayer is not like that. It is very real, because one prayer changed the direction of my life.

In my thirties, I was living ordinary family life with small children. We worked, took care of the kids, and weekends often included restaurants and parties. Alcohol was part of that life. It went on for years. At the time, I did not fully understand how big a role it had started to play. Many things look normal as long as you are living right in the middle of them.

Then came one morning I will never forget.

I woke up after a night out feeling absolutely awful. My head hurt, my whole body felt heavy, and my mind was full of that messy, empty, horrible feeling that is hard to explain. Shame, tiredness, disappointment, disgust with myself. All of it at once. And then came a very clear thought: enough. I had had enough. I did not want alcohol in my life anymore.

In that moment, I prayed to God for help.

It was not a long or beautiful prayer. It was direct: God, help me. Help me out of this. Help me so I do not keep living like this. I still remember that moment because something happened that I cannot properly explain. Peace came. Certainty came. A deep knowing that this thing had changed.

And it really did change.

That prayer was the beginning of my new life. Not slowly, not with endless wobbling back and forth, but truly. Alcohol left my life. It has now been well over twenty years, and I am still sober.

That is why I find it hard to talk about prayer as only a beautiful idea or some spiritual extra added onto everyday life. For me, it was not a small comforting moment. It was not just a bit of relief on a horrible morning. It was an encounter where God stepped into my reality and did something I could not have done myself.

It was a miracle.

I do not mean that prayer is a machine where you always immediately get whatever you ask for. I do not mean that prayer always changes everything at once in such a visible way. What I mean is that prayer is real. God hears. He is not just an idea or some distant religious figure, but the living God who can truly intervene in a person’s life.

For me, that became real in the moment I finally understood that I did not want to continue the same way anymore.

Maybe that is why this still matters so much to me. When I talk about the power of prayer, I am not talking about theory. I am talking about my own life. I am talking about asking God to help me break free from alcohol, and God answering. I am talking about one prayer dividing my life in two. There was life before that morning, and life after it.

That is one of the astonishing things about prayer. A person can come before God completely honestly, without impressive words, without a polished surface, without trying to look spiritual or strong. And sometimes that is exactly where God can do the most. Not always dramatically, but truly.

I have often wondered what would have happened if I had not prayed in that moment. I do not know. I only know what happened when I did pray. I cannot deny it or make it smaller. My life changed.

That is why I cannot treat prayer lightly. I think we do not always understand how close help may be. Sometimes we are completely worn out and cannot see a way through anymore. And still, right there, prayer can become the moment where everything begins to change.

For me, it was exactly that.

If you are completely done, you can tell God that honestly. That is enough.

“Call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.”
(Psalm 50:15, KJV)
